SYP Chairman’s Report 2017

By 20th May 2017 September 11th, 2019 News

The annual report from the Chairman of the Sawtry Youth Project, Ray Groves.

I would like to start by thanking all of the Sawtry Youth Project (SYP) Committee, the Sawtry Youth Project (SYP) Junior Committee and all our volunteers and helpers for their hard work and ongoing commitment and support. I would also like to thank everyone who has donated prizes for fundraising events and also those who have made cash donations.

One of the founding members of the SYP Committee, Ian Fowler, has decided to stand down. Ian has played an important part in making SYP what it is today carrying out roles as Chairman and IT/ Media Officer. Ian will remain part of SYP as a member and will continue to offer support and invaluable knowledge and experience. I would like to thank Ian for all his hard work and hope to see him at many events throughout the next twelve months and beyond.

Following an initial letter of consent issued to SYP in 2015 by Sawtry Parish Council, the SYP committee has written to Sawtry Parish Council formally requesting full written approval for an all wheels facility, outside exercise equipment and area of seating to be sited on Parish Council land. The letter was discussed during the Sawtry Parish Council Communities Committee meeting held at the beginning of May 2017. The Parish Council have requested some additional information which the SYP committee are in the process of gathering. A proposal has been put forward for approval at full Council requesting that the next Communities Committee meeting is held at St Judith’s field with the sole purpose of discussing our proposal. We continue to build on our strong relationship with Sawtry Parish Council and look forward to working with them closely in the future.

Our bank balance is looking extremely healthy. I’m pleased to report that we’ve now reached and surpassed our target of 10% of the overall cost of the project.  Our Treasurer will give more detailed information during his report. This is a huge achievement and one that everyone who has been involved with the project should be immensely proud.

Having reached our initial target of 10% of the overall cost of the project, the SYP committee has made the decision to cease all major fundraising. This will allow us time to focus on a definitive plan, explore avenues available for grant and funding and to continue developing the project by working with our community. We will, of course, continue to accept donations and wish to remain part of community events such as the Sawtry Carnival and Simon Costigan Memorial Day.

The SYP website and social media pages are looking fantastic. The social media pages and the website remain our biggest methods of communicating information outside of the SYP committee. I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in the development and ongoing improvement in these areas.

The SYP Junior Committee continues to evolve and develop. Having worked closely with the young people who are part of this committee I would like to say what a true credit they are to their parents, communities and ultimately themselves. You really are an amazing, selfless group of young people. I would like to congratulate Ben Tomsett for his fantastic SYP litter patrol initiative. It’s proven to be a resounding success, resulting in a cleaner and tidier village.

I’m delighted to announce the launch of the Sawtry Youth Project Awards of Excellence. The award will be sponsored by local business’. The awards are being set up to reward and inspire young people between the ages of 11-17 from within our community. Nominations can be made by anyone within our community, the only requirements are that the young person being nominated lives within our community and they have acted in a manner which has inspired other young people or has made a positive difference to the lives of others. A form for nominations will be set up on the SYP website within the next two weeks and nominations for the 2018 awards will be open right through until the 2018 SYP AGM.

We must continue to remain focused and driven in order to meet our objectives throughout 2018. I’m currently working closely with other SYP committee members to finalise our strategy for 2018. This will then be added to the agenda and discussed at the next full SYP committee meeting

My Very Best Wishes
